Why was Jesus' ministry so short - was it symbolic?

Jesus specifies an exact period of "three years and six months", Jesus is obviously making an important point here - just as He has illustrated what His ministry is going to involve, by quoting Isaiah, and who He has come to minister to, by referring to the experiences of Elijah and Elisha, so He is illustrating how long His ministry will last by this reference.
